Protein Powder

There are endless options of protein powders to choose from today. They must all be pretty similar so you might as well just pick the cheapest (and biggest!) bottle on the shelf, right? Wrong!! The protein that we put into our bodies is so important. Protein powder is the most widely used workout nutrient. The majority of protein powders that you will find on the shelf today have toxic chemicals added to them such as aspartame, artificially flavoring, artifical color, and even trans fats! Of course a protein powder is going to taste like a Little Debbie snack when it essential is one. Another item to be weary of in protein powders is a soy based protein. The majority of soy is processed in such a way that it actually increases the amount of estrogen in the body.

Lets talk a little bit about the benefits of a high quality protein powder

High in nutrients- a good quality protein powder is extremely high in nutrients and is exactly what your body needs to boost it to the next level. Your body needs protein not only for survival but it is what the body primarily uses to build muscle mass. Whey protein in particular is especially high in nutrients. Whey actually represents the majority of major proteins that are found in human breast milk versus in cows milk. Even though whey does contain a small amount of dairy it contains very small amounts of the protein casein–which the majority of human bodies do not have the ability to breakdown (and have a huge intolerance to!) Whey protein is high in calcium, potassium, phosphorous, and vitamins A, C, B1,2,3,5, and B12!

It is digested very easily and quickly. This may sound a little strange. Don’t we want our foods to stay in our stomachs for longer lengths of time to make us full longer? Not when it comes to protein powder. Whey protein transmits through the stomach quickly and is rapidly absorbed by our intestines. This allows for the body to quickly and efficiently use this protein to build muscle in the body.

Whey protein increases glutathione. Glutathione is a nutrient that I love to talk about. It is the most powerful anti-oxidant that the body is able to produce on its own. Glutathione is a crucial nutrient for increasing detoxification, increasing transmitters that make you feel calm and relaxed, and is anti-aging. Research has shown that glutathione actually decreases with exercise. Getting a boost of the substates needed to produce glutathione is crucial after a workout.

These are just a few of the many benefits that a high quality protein powder produce for you. Of course, not everyone is able to do any type of dairy. For this purpose, there are two other high quality protein powders that I recommend. One is actually based from the marrow of the cow and contains beneficial nutrients such as collagen.
