Stress is just like taxes… unavoidable. We all experience different types of stress in our lives. If you want to gain back energy, mental clarity, and help shed a few of those extra pounds it is essential to learn how to cope and heal during and after stressful times. There are several types of stress.

  1. Emotional Stress— a child is struggling in school, life is weighing on you, or you are worried about a big upcoming meeting at work. When we think about stress, we typically think about emotional stress.
  2. Physical stress— overtraining (more common than we think!), a physical injury such as a concussion, or a physical illness such as lyme disease, a gut infection, or the common cold.
  3. Spiritual Stress— Every colony of people from discovered on this earth through time have had a spirituality in their culture. We are spiritual beings. Spirituality does not necessarily mean just believing in a God, but can be a connection with nature, or connecting with an inner peace. This is one of the areas that people experience a huge amount of stress and never know it. Finding an inner spiritual peace.

How Does Stress Work?

Stress is mainly controlled by a gland called the adrenal gland. We have two of them and they sit right on top of our kidneys. Our adrenal glands are give out hormones such as epinephrine (adrenaline) and cortisol (for long term stress.) If a bear were to jump out oof the woods, our hearts would start pumping, our pupils would dilate, and we would begin to sweat. Your body sends all of your energy into the muscles so that you can either fight or take flight. If a bear is chasing you, the body is not worried about digesting the breakfast you had this morning, it is trying to keep you alive! Many of us can get stuck in this type of fight or flight response for extended periods of time and the adrenals can get burned out. We are surviving, but we aren’t thriving.

Dr. Mitch’s Stress Protocol

1. Adaptogenic HerbsNo matter what type of stress or level of stress that you are under, adaptogenic herbs bring your stress response back into balance. If you are going through an extreme amount of stress, adaptogenic herbs help to bring the stress response down to help you relax. If you are experiencing adrenal fatigue or burnout, adaptogenic herbs help to heal and repair your stress response giving you your energy and vitality back. A few examples of adaptogenic herbs are ashwaganda, holy basil, and schisandra. Here are the adaptogenic formulas that I recommend.

2. Vitamin C–When the body is under stress is quickly depletes vitamin C stores. Vitamin C is critical in the body for joint/cartilage health, immune health, and is an antioxidant.

Vitamin C does need to be taken at higher doses in order to be maximally effective. A good starting dose of vitamin C for an adult under stress is 2g twice daily. There is a brand new liposomal vitamin C that just came out on the market that is actually able to cross into the cell bilayer making it even more effective. I recommend 1 gram of liposomal C twice daily

3. Magnesium–You guessed it! Stress not only depletes vitamin C, but it also depletes magnesium. Magnesium is actually the most deficient mineral in the US. Magnesium is absolutely crucial to every aspect of our health. If you are deficient in magnesium it can be nearly impossible to heal. One common sign of magnesium deficiency is when you feel your eye twitching just a little bit and you can’t quite get it to stop.

4. Discover Where Your Stress is Coming From–Sounds easier said than done, am I right? When are bodies are under stress it is like pouring gas on a flame. It massively increases your free radicals, affects your blood sugar, and increases aging. No matter how much water you pour on the flame, it will keep burning if you don’t figure out the root cause of your stress and work to decrease it. Is whatever is causing your stress worth your health?
